Zamfara to restore telecommunications services

The Zamfara State government has announced plans to restore telecommunications services in the state from Monday.

The announcement follows that of Kaduna State which on Friday announced the restoration of services in the part of the state where they had been suspended.

The Zamfara government had cut telecommunications networks in 14 local government areas in September to control the activities of bandits in the state.

But on October 1, Governor Bello Matatwalle ordered the restoration of networks in Gusau, the state capital.

Sokoto State had also taken the same measure to combat banditry and insecurity.

Zamfara Governor’s spokesman Zailani Baffa announced in a statement on Saturday the lifting of the telecommunications embargo in the state from Monday.

He said the decision was informed by an “encouraging report of peace returning to the state following military operations against the bandits”.

Baffa said the governor made the announcement at the APC state convention held Saturday at the Trade Fair Complex in Gusau.

“I want to announce today that we have made the decision to lift the telecom ban in the state. God willing, starting next Monday, we will have that effected.

“The decision is due to encouraging reports of successes achieved in the state through this strict measure,” the governor said.

He thanked the people of the state for their patience and perseverance through this difficult time.

He said his (Governor’s) administration would continue to take the necessary steps to preserve peace and protect lives and property.
